St. John's Wort: Interactions To Know
St. John's Wort is one of Marycept's six named ingredients, and it's the one we most want every customer to understand before they start.
What It Is
St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a flowering plant with a long history of traditional use, primarily recognized for supporting mood balance.
Why It's Included
St. John's Wort is believed to support the balance of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which play a role in mood and, indirectly, mental clarity and focus.
The Interactions You Need To Know
This is the important part: St. John's Wort induces liver enzymes that speed up the breakdown of many common medications, meaning it can make them less effective. This includes:
- Hormonal birth control — St. John's Wort can reduce its effectiveness.
- Blood thinners like warfarin — interactions can affect clotting time.
- Antidepressants (SSRIs, MAOIs) — combining these with St. John's Wort raises the risk of serotonin syndrome, a potentially serious condition.
- Immunosuppressants — St. John's Wort can reduce their effectiveness, which is especially important for transplant patients.
Our Recommendation
If you take any prescription medication, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting Marycept. This isn't a formality — it's a genuinely important safety step given what St. John's Wort can do.
